Martyrs remembered on Police Commemoration Day

Policemen across ranks pay homage to those who laid down their lives



Honouring sacrifice: Policemen pay homage at the Martyr’s Memorial at Gorimedu on Sunday.

PUDUCHERRY: The territorial police here on Sunday joined their counterparts in other States in paying homage to policemen who laid down their lives while on duty.

Led by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who also holds the Home portfolio, policemen cutting across ranks paid homage at the Police Martyrs’ Memorial at Gorimedu on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, observed ever year on October 21.

The day is observed since 1959 in the memory of a small contingent of police personnel, a large number of whom died when attacked by Chinese troops. From then on, all states and UTs observe this day as a tribute to those valiant officers and soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their motherland, said a senior officer.

Deputy Inspector General of Police S. Vasudeva Rao read out the details of police personnel who laid down their lives in the service of the nation in different parts of the country during the current year. According to him, as many as 714 personnel, including the members of paramilitary forces, died during September 1, 2006 to August 31, 2007.
