The theatre will accommodate 350 viewers

A delegation visits Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai

BHUBANESWAR: For the theatre fraternity of the State who have been lamenting ‘a step-motherly attitude’ of the Department of Culture towards their welfare, here is the right reason to rejoice. The State Government has decided to construct an exclusive theatre complex in the capital soon. Commissioner of Culture Gopinath Mohanty told The Hindu that an auditorium with the state-of-the-art facilities would come up on the State-owned Odissi Research Centre premises costing Rs. 2.40 crores.

Being modelled after the famous Prithvi Theatres of Mumbai, it would have a capacity to accommodate 350 viewers, he said. The sophisticated auditorium apart, the theatre complex would house a sales counter of the publications of the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi. It would also have a canteen to cater to the theatre artistes. The complex would be used round the year for staging of plays, conduct of workshops, seminars and training programmes, the Commissioner said.

A delegation has already visited the Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai to study its design, Mr.Mohanty informed and added that he had convened a meeting of several eminent theatre personalities of the State to finalise the details of the project. The delegation of theatre experts included Asim Basu, Sachi Das, Ajit Das, Dhira Mallick, Subodh Patnaik, Nabin Parida and Manoj Patnaik, itt was learnt.

Cultural complex

The Government has also decided to construct another cultural complex over the sprawling campus near the Sainik School in the city that would have an auditorium with sitting capacity of 1000 people. The complex would have a museum and a library on culture.
