“Make mother tongue compulsory in schools”

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: Lok Sabha member from Puducherry M. Ramadass has urged the territorial administration to introduce mother tongue as a compulsory language in the four regions of the Union Territory.

In a letter to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, he said the government should introduce a law to make Tamil a compulsory subject in Puducherry and Karaikal regions.

Mahe, Yanam

Likewise, Malayalam should be made compulsory in Mahe and Telegu in Yanam, he said.

Recalling the attempts made by other States to make mother tongue a compulsory subject, he said both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka had passed laws in the this regard. Karnataka had even made a provision that jobs would be given to only those who have studied Kannada .

Up to Standard X

Mr. Ramadass said the government should pass the law in the coming session of the Assembly to make mother tongue compulsory up to Standard X.
