Wanted criminal shot dead

Ghaziabad: A criminal, wanted in several cases of murder and extortion, was killed in an encounter with police on Modi Nagar-Hapur road, police said on Sunday. A sub-inspector was also seriously injured in the encounter that took place on Saturday night, the police said.

Vikrant Singh, who carried a cash reward of Rs 20,000 on his head, was wanted in seven cases of murder and issuing extortion threats to the chairperson of a management institute here, they said.

He was shot dead near Guyana under Hapur police station area while he was going on a motorcycle with an accomplice Yogesh, who managed to escape, Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Ratan said.

The injured sub-inspector Rajesh Verma, who headed the operation, was admitted to a hospital in Hapur where his condition was stated to be serious, he said.

Vikrant had escaped from police custody when he was brought to the Meerut Court from Bijnor jail on July 22 this year, he said. -- PTI
