Recruitment to IAS, IPS

A number of vacancies are notified by the UPSC for IAS, IPS and allied Central services and a good number of hard working, deserving and honest aspirants would apply. A lucky few would make it and are allotted to various states. Naturally, people expect to get good governance from them. But from what we have been reading in newspapers these days, the situation is different and these very officers at the helm of affairs, more often than not, fall prey to circumstances to the chagrin of the public. Does the method of selection of IAS cadres therefore warrant a re-look? Or does it need to focus into the fabric of the candidate’s character a little too deep?

Beware of toys

It is well known that most of the manufacturers of children’s toys are using chemicals and poisonous materials in making various models of toys. These toys available all over the State are hazardous to health. We, parents, happily purchase these toys and hand them over to our children, exposing them to harmful chemical and poisonous materials. It seems there is no control on these manufacturers of unbranded companies in taking precautionary measures including label declaration, etc. Parents should be alert while purchasing them and prefer branded ones in their own interest. I also request the authorities concerned to take the necessary steps to curb unbranded companies and ensure toys posing health hazard are not kept for sale in the market.

Earmark area for protest

When protests and rallies are held in the city, they result in traffic jams paralysing normal life. To avoid such a situation, it is suggested that a specific area be earmarked where the protesters could demonstrate freely. They will have the freedom to protest at that place and it will not cause any inconvenience to the general public.

Improve RTC services

There is lot of scope for improvement in APSRTC services. More city buses may be routed via Visakhaptnam railway station. Many bus shelters are in a dilapidated condition and have to be renovated. All casual and daily wage earners may be issued passes for 15 days instead of one month and strict vigilance may be enforced to see that marketable items in RTC are not sold at a price higher than the maximum retail price. Also, sanitation should be improved and boards displaying bus routes should be set up at main road junctions. More buses may be plied during peak hours for the benefit of school, college and office-going people. Senior citizens may be charged less like in railways and surveys be conducted afresh to look into the possibility of extending bus services to all remote urban areas.

Ramasethu controversy

In good old days, religious texts were the only repositories of histories of the peoples of various faiths. Let us not judge at this distance of time that Ramasethu was not man-made. Are not the Egyptian pyramids man-made? Is not Ashoka Pillar man-made? Can we produce similar ones again now? Can we say now what the depth of the sea was at that time to decide the feasibility of its construction? There being no way to prove or disprove archeologists, we grudgingly accept their inferences. Great scientists always aver that what is true today may not be true a few years hence. It is a scientific dictum that creation continues to change but not the creator.
