No animal sacrifices made during puja

Correspondent

CUTTACK: There is good news for animal lovers. No animal sacrifice was made during the Durga puja in any of the shrines in Cuttack district. The Cuttack district administration successfully ensured that the rituals of animal sacrifices are completely done away with in the district as per the direction of the state High Court.

“No report of any animal sacrifice was received from any part of Cuttack district on Maha Ashtami or Nabami puja of Goddess Durga on Friday and Saturday,” said an official of the district administration here on Sunday.

In the absence of any specific law banning animal sacrifice in the country, the district administration was able to sensitize the people against this age-old practice to propitiate the God, said District Deputy Collector Aditya Mohapatra.

Official sources said animal sacrifices in Sirlo temple in Kishore Nagar was stopped in 2003, Dakshin Kali Peeth in Niali in 2004 and Bhatarika temple in Badamba in 2005. However, the practice was on in Charchika temple in Banki. But it has been stopped since 2006, sources added.

At a recently convened meeting by the Banki Sub-Collector, the Charchika temple administration had reassured that the animal sacrifices during Maha Astami puja would be done away with. "As per the assurances the people of the locality cooperated with the administration and the ill-practice seems to be a part of the history now, Mr. Mohapatra said.

The devotees performed the Nabami puja of the deity at all the puja mandaps of the district with fervour on Saturday.
