CHENNAI: The Tamilnadu Farmers’ Sangam has urged the Government to initiate measures to resolve the crisis in the production of sago, a tapioca derivative, in the wake of revised guidelines on the maximum permissible hydrogen cyanide content in the end product.
In a statement, Sangam general secretary V. Duraimanickam said tapioca farmers had been badly hit by an extending crisis despite the decision at a meeting convened by Agriculture Minister Veerapandi K. Arumugam, to resolve the conflicting views over the maximum permissible levels of HCN in sago. The warehousing and marketing of the produce is being done by Sagoserve, a Salem-based industrial co-operative society. — Special Correspondent
