JAIPUR: A week-long collaborative campaign to establish the dignity of girl child and stop female foeticide ended here on Sunday with hundreds of people signing a pledge to combat the abhorrent practice of killing girls in the womb and change the mindset of treating daughters as “liabilities”. The campaign was launched by a group of non-Government organisations in collaboration with the Indian Oil Corporation at 10 strategically located petrol pumps in the Pink City, where about 500 persons each were contacted daily and encouraged to sign the pledge. AwarenessState Medical and Health Minister Digambar Singh, addressing the valedictory function, said the problems of skewed child sex ratio and gender inequities and the entrenched practices of gender discrimination could be tackled by an effective awareness campaign.Dr. Singh said the sex selection and sex selective abortions were not only unlawful but also defied all moral standards. The institutions which took part in the campaign were the Society to Uplift Rural Economy (SURE), All Workers’ Association of Karigors Entrepreneurs (AWAKE), National Service Scheme (NSS), International Foundation for Election System (IFES) and USAID.
