Heavy rain in State; relief work stepped up

District Collectors told to remain alert


Loss estimated to exceed Rs. 10 lakh

11 houses destroyed in rain


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has sounded an alert and stepped up relief activities in different parts of the State following heavy rain during the last two days.

K. Ashraf (37) of Alappuzha district was killed in a wall collapse. Two persons have been reported missing following flash floods in Malappuram district.

A pilgrim was washed away in Pathanamthitta district. However, official sources said the death in the district and a similar case in Malappuram district were not related to natural calamities.

As per reports reaching here, 11 houses were destroyed in the rain while 161 houses sustained damage.

The total loss is estimated to exceed Rs.10 lakh. About a dozen families have been shifted to safer places in Thiruvananthapuram district. An official release said Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran had issued alerts to District Collectors following intensification of the north-east monsoon.

The Minister has directed the Collectors to sanction Rs.1 lakh to the next of kin of those who died in the natural calamities.
