Larijani to attend talks with E.U.

Atul Aneja

DUBAI: Iran’s outgoing chief negotiator on the nuclear issue, Ali Larijani and his successor, Saeed Jalili, will travel together for crucial talks with the European Union (E.U.) in Rome on Tuesday.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyed Mohammad Ali Hosseini said on Sunday that Mr. Larijani would attend the meeting with the E.U. foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, as the representative of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

There is speculation that Mr. Larijani’s resignation was linked to the reported “secret proposal” that the visiting Russian President, Vladimir Putin, had brought with him during his recent visit to Tehran. Mr. Larijani had said after Mr. Putin had met Ayatollah Khamenei that the Russian President had a “special view” on Iran’s nuclear programme.
