Compensation for dead policemen’s families

BANGALORE: As many as 717 policemen of various ranks across the country died between September 1, 2006 and August 31, 2007.

On Sunday, their colleagues in the State here paid respects to these men who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Cash compensation of Rs. 5 lakh was given to the wives of the 11 policemen from the State who died in the same period.

Director-General of Police K.R. Srinivasan announced that a pension scheme for the widows of policemen would be put in place in the next three days.

The names of the 11 policemen from the State who died are A.B. Venkatesh, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASI); Shivamallaiah, ASI; Yoganand Swamy, Chief Head Constable, Sharanappa, Assistant Head Constable; Muralidhar P. Gawkar, Chief Police Constable (CPC); Sharanappa, Assistant Police Constable (APC); Raghuramaiah, police constable; Hadimani, Reserve Police Constable; Shanthaveerappa, CPC; Hanumanthaiah, APC and Chandrasekhar, APC.

The Police Martyrs’ Day is observed in memory of 10 Central Reserve Armed Force personnel who died in a battle between India and China at Ladakh in 1959.
