Education, urbanisation and industrialisation are transforming India before our eyes. The vernaculars have to play a central role. It would also play a pivotal role as one of the foremost scientific/technical knowledge store house. But our vernaculars have no literary/intellectual activity worth the name. We have to enrich our vernaculars with translations of all the oceans of knowledge of East and West into simple, spoken language. The great literary and philosophic works of the 17th, 18th and 19th century, Europe of the post-Renaissance period, all such books require to be translated into simple spoken style . We require a whole generation of translators of highest intellectual calibre. S.B.V.R. Jagannadh, Anantapur
