Farmers asked to contact their respective taluk horticulture officers HASSAN: As much as Rs. 10.02 crore will be spent in Hassan district under the National Horticulture Mission for the year 2007-08, according to a press release by Deputy Director of Horticulture Nagaraj. Under this programme, the cultivation of mango, plantain and sapota will be encouraged in 102 villages in the district on a area of 2,124 hectares selected under the Suvarna Grama Yojana. Mango will be cultivated on a 660-hectare area, Sapota on a 758-hectare area, and plantain on a 706-hectare area. On this, Rs. 93.46 lakh would be spent. He asked farmers to contact their respective taluk horticulture officers in this regard. Mr. Nagaraj said Rs. 475.61 lakh would be spent for extension of horticulture crops on a 5250-hectare area. Beneficiaries were being identified village-wise. He said drip irrigation was being encouraged in the district, for which Rs. 200 lakh was being set aside. Sprinkler irrigation would also be encouraged, for which farmers would be eligible for subsidy for cultivation on an area of up to five hectares. For drip irrigation on up to two hectares of land, 75 per cent subsidy would be given, and on cultivation on areas measuring between three hectares to five hectares, 50 per cent subsidy would be given.
