Chitradurga: On account of Police Martyrs’ Day observed here on Sunday, rich tribute was paid to police officials who scarified their lives to ensure the country’s security. In a special programme organised at the District Arms Reserve ground, several police officials had gathered to pay tribute to the martyrs. The day is observed every year on October 21, to remember gallant police officers who had fought against the Chinese Army in Ladakh in 1959. During the battle, 10 police officers led by the former Deputy Superintendent of Police (Central Reserve Police force) Karan Singh laid down their lives. A memorial was later built in Ladakh in their memory. Speaking after paying tribute to the martyrs, Superintendent of Police B. Shivakumar recalled the contribution of the officers who had died while on duty. DeathsHe said that between September 1, 2006 and August 31, 2007, 719 police officials in the country had died while in battle. Of them 11 were from Karnataka, he said.
