NEW DELHI: With just two weeks left for Diwali, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has reviewed the position of street-lighting in the Capital. At a high-level meeting here over the weekend, Ms. Diskhit stressed the need to have well-lit roads across the city. She also issued instructions for maintenance and proper upkeep of all streetlights in the city to ensure that all lights remain functional during Diwali. The meeting was attended by Power Minister A. K. Walia and Public Works Department Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, besides all the Chief Executive Officers of the three private distribution companies. During the meeting, Ms. Dikshit asked the Power Minister to write to all MLAs and MPs to cooperate in the effort to make all streetlights functional. They have also been asked to bring it to the notice of the Power Minister about non-functional streetlights. The Chief Minister stressed the need to take urgent action as certain important roads in Delhi have been gripped in darkness. The discoms concerned have been asked to submit certificate stating the status of streetlights in their areas. The Chief Minister expressed concern over most of the high-mast lights not functioning. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is also being requested to take care of their high-mast lights installed in public parks. Ms. Dikshit exhorted officers to undertake exercise of maintenance and inspection of streetlights and work in tandem so that all public roads in Delhi are well lit before the festival. They have been asked to submit their action taken report within ten days to the Department of Power.
