FKCCI not member of elite bodies

M. Raghuram

BANGALORE: Despite being one of the oldest and one of the most active Federation of Chambers of Commerce in the country, the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) has not been given its due place in the Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee (ZRUCC) for the past two years and membership of the New Mangalore Port Trust. While the ZRUCC membership has been given to the Hubli-based Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) the membership of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has been given to the Mangalore-based Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangalore

Membership important

Being in the ZRUCC and the NMPT had been very important for the FKCCI as the decisions taken in the ZRUCC and NMPT have a bearing on the development of the region as well as the State, especially in trade and commerce.

According to sources in FKCCI, the federation had tried to impress on the Railway Board the importance of it being on the committee and the board. It had presented its case to the Chief General Manager of Railways without much effect.

Development snag

The FKCCI sources felt that due to it not being represented on these two elite bodies the development of Karnataka has been constricted to only the divisional level. For the regional chambers of commerce and industry the divisional level bodies in the Railways, like the DRUCC would be apt.

Important

The sources agree that Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry had been able to work sincerely for the development of the divisional level railways as the South Western Railway Headquarters was at Hubli.

But when looking at the overall development of railway infrastructure for the State, the FKCCI would have been able to chip in quite a bit, the sources stated.

The FKCCI has also understood the importance of developing the Railway network in the northern districts of the State.
