Road overbridge construction near Vandalur Railway Station begins

TAMBARAM: The Highways Department has commenced the construction of a road overbridge to replace a railway level crossing near the Vandalur Railway Station.

Preliminary works started about a week ago. The service lane running alongside Grand Southern Trunk Road is being dug up for building retaining walls for the ramp.

The Department’s share in the project cost is Rs. 17 crore while the Southern Railway is expected to spend about Rs. 3 crore as pillars and the super structure of the bridge are to be constructed on its land.

The project is being taken up under the Railway Works Programme, senior engineers of the Highways Department said. The General Arrangement Drawing was agreed upon by the two agencies some time ago. They got the clearance from National Highways Authority of India for using its portion of the land last month, the engineers said.

Once completed, the bridge is expected to ease vehicular movement in this intersection where traffic bottlenecks are common. The bridge would replace the level crossing (LC No. 34) at the intersection of GST Road and Vandalur–Wallajahbad Radial Road.

According to a survey conducted by Southern Railway in September 2007, there was a traffic volume of 14.7 lakh train vehicle units a day.

According to officials, the number of vehicles passing through the level crossing had gone up phenomenally in the past couple of years owing to increase in industrial activity in areas such as Padappai and Oragadam, both located on Vandalur–Wallajahbad Radial Road.

When the gates at the level crossing are down, there would be massive queuing up of vehicles causing traffic problems on GST Road - National Highway 45.

The ramps on GST Road would be 732 metres-long from one end to the other.

The four ramps on GST Road would be 8.5 metres-wide, while the single ramp on Vandalur–Wallajahbad Radial Road would have four lanes. The bridge would have an elevated rotary like the MIT Bridge. The project cost was less as there was no necessity to acquire land, but there were some encroachments that needed to be removed, the engineers added.
