Units “crush” health, ecosystem

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: Stone-crushing units engaged in crushing blue metal have been allegedly polluting residential areas abutting Otteri Road here for several years.

Residents of Swamy Nagar in Otteri said the dust emanating from mounds of crushed blue metal dirtied their houses and caused wheezing and respiratory ailments. Children are the worst affected, they said. Mounds of crushed blue metal can be seen close to the houses located near the crushing units.

The remnant powder is also being dumped in front of the houses.

Residents alleged that measures had not been taken by the units to prevent air pollution.

The District Environmental Engineer, TNPCB, Vellore, K. Kamaraj, said that after an inspection, the Board asked all 10 units in Otteri to adopt air pollution control measures as per the recommendations of National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Nagpur.
