CHENNAI: Ever since the launch of the direct container services to Korea and China from Chennai Container Terminal (CCT), granite products and granite bloc continue to occupy the top slot in exports, followed by cotton yarn and fibre with 15 per cent, sugar and salt with 10 per cent. Bowing to the demand from the trading community, Asia Chennai Services (ACS) was launched on August 21. During September 2007 (the first full month of operations), CCT exported 1,554 Twenty-Foot Equivalent sUnits (TEU’s) to Korea and China and imported 5,083 TEUs. Incidentally, China is the big customer of granite products and granite bloc and it accounted for nearly 48 per cent of ACS exports. Electrical and electronic goods accounted for 15 per cent of imports, furniture items and steel 9 per cent, machinery products 8 per cent and chemicals 6 per cent. “These figures pertain only to ACS performance. We have not taken into account the TEUs of IndFX2 and North China Chennai (NCC) services as we wanted to evaluate the performance of ACS. Today we offer 12,000 TEU’s weekly to North China. The new services have cut down the turnaround time for importers drastically as these vessels need not have to call on Port Klang and Singapore,” DP World Chennai CEO Ennarasu Karunesan told The Hindu on Friday.
