‘Social justice tea parties’ planned in more villages over next month

K.T. Sangameswaran

Since August this year, tea parties have been held in 100 villages

CHENNAI: Encouraged by the success of ‘social justice tea parties’ in creating awareness about the need to eradicate the ‘two tumbler system,’ the Social Justice and Human Rights (SJ and HR) wing of the police has proposed to conduct such parties in 100 more villages over the next one month.

Instructions have been given to officers in the districts, Inspector-General of Police, SJ and HR wing, Prateep V. Philip, has told The Hindu.

Since August this year, the tea parties, organised by the wing in association with village heads, political parties, Friends of Police and NGOs, were held in 100 villages.

Creating awareness

Holding a tea party in a village does not necessarily mean that the ‘two tumbler system’ prevails there. It is mainly an endeavour for creating awareness among various sections of society.

Dr. Philip says according to reports, the evil practice prevails only “in certain pockets” of Cuddalore district. In several tea shops disposable cups are used.

He participated in tea parties in some villages and spoke about social equality. Nearly 100 persons, including Adi Dravidars and other castes, took part.

Suo motu case

He says following an allegation that in a tea shop at Rajagoundanpalayam in Coimbatore district there were two types of benches for customers, the special unit registered a suo motu case.

It detected practice of the ‘two-tumbler system’ at Sriputhur and Kallipadi villages and the wing’s Cuddalore unit registered three cases under the Protection of Civil Rights Act this year.

Personnel attached to the SJ and HR wing have been instructed to conduct surprise raids.
