Rahman case: CBI Continues probe

Special Correspondent

Family members questioned

KOLKATA: Investigations by a Central Bureau of Investigation team into the death of Rizwanur Rahman, a computer graphics teacher whose body was found lying by the side of the railway tracks near the city on September 21, entered its second day here on Sunday.

The team that arrived from New Delhi has, over the past two days, been questioning members of Rahman’s family. It has visited the spot where his body was found. A senior member of a human rights group with whom Rahman was in touch was also questioned.

CBI officials were also in touch with the Criminal Investigation Department, which was probing the events leading to Rahman’s death till the Calcutta High Court issued an interim order on October 16 directing the CBI to investigate the case. It has asked the CBI to submit its report to the Court within two months.

The State government will be assisting the CBI team in providing all information it might require in the course of its investigations. A judicial inquiry, ordered by the State government, is also in progress. A report is to be submitted within three months.

The CBI have already registered a case of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, and under Sections 506 and 120(B) against Ashok Todi, father-in-law of Rahman and some others on the basis of a first information report filed by Rahman’s mother and brother.

Right direction

PTI reports:

The CBI said on Sunday that all aspects were being investigated. “We have examined many [persons] during the day and investigation is progressing well. It is going in the right direction and with good speed,” CBI Joint Director (Special Crime Cell) Arun Kumar told reporters here.

The driver and guard of the EMU local train which reportedly hit Rizwanur were also questioned on Sunday.
