Bing wins by a shot

GREATER NOIDA: Singapore’s Lam Chih Bing survived a few anxious moments on the 18th green before claiming the biggest ever cheque on India’s domestic golf tour in the Rs. 80 lakh BILT Open at the Jaypee Greens course here on Sunday.

The 30-year-old led through the final round to win a shot ahead of challenger Digvijay Singh. Lam Chih Bing, runner-up to Jyoti Randhawa last year, carded a par round for a winning tally of 13-under 275.

Bing’s triumph was worth Rs. 12,93,200 ($32,330). Thirtyfive-year-old Digvijay, following a second successive four-under 68, collected Rs. 8,93,300, the biggest cheque of his career. Rahil Gangjee, third in last week’s Indian Open, Shamim Khan and Himmat Singh Rai shared the third spot at 279 in this season-opener.

Not threatened

“I did not feel threatened as long as I was leading. Yes, on the 18th green, Digvijay almost holed out that putt. That was the only time I had a panic attack. Compared to the other days, I played the back nine very conservatively,” admitted the champion who had two top-10 finishes on the PGTI Tour on way to the eighth place in the 2006-07 Order of Merit.

Kapil Kumar won the amateur title with a tally of 318, six shots ahead of Lakhan Singh.
