KOCHI: The city will host the Commonwealth Local Government Good Practice Scheme Dissemination seminar. The two-day seminar will begin at Hotel Abad Plaza on Tuesday. Delegates from London Borough Newham, Cardiff City, Leicester City Council, Birmingham City Council, Amenfi District Municipality and several Indian municipalities will reach Kochi for the seminar. Nearly 15 mayors are expected. Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja will inaugurate the programme at 10.30 a.m. Good Practice SchemeKochi and the City council of Cardiff had entered into partnerships for several Good Practice schemes. Urban planners and civic administrators from Kochi had visited Cardiff as part of the exchange programme. The Good Practice Scheme supports the capacity-building programmes of local governments in select countries of the Commonwealth, especially for implementing the Millennium Development Goals. The programme promotes council-to-council partnerships and also funds practical capacity-building projects. The programme has been funded by the Department for International Development of the U.K. The Kochi seminar proposes to draw out the key lessons from projects focussing on approaches and policy recommendations which will be relevant in India. The participants at the seminar will be representatives of local governments working on projects, those interested in getting more involved in international exchange projects, stakeholders from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, the Kerala Government, All-India Institute for Local Self Government, DFID, and CLGF member organisations.
