THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The month-long Gandhi Smriti observance organised by the District Congress Committee (DCC) will be marked by rallies and public meetings at the four places in Thiruvananthapuram district where Mahatma Gandhi had visited. DCC president V.S. Sivakumar said arrangements had been made to mobilise public participation for the functions to be held at the four places. On October 22, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala is scheduled to flag off a Smriti Yatra from Sivagiri, Varkala, where Gandhiji had visited Sree Narayana Guru. President of the Sivagiri Trust Prakasananda will hand over to Mr. Chennithala a photograph of Gandhiji with Sree Narayana Guru. The KPCC president will also inaugurate a public meeting at Varkala in this connection. Varkala Kahar, MLA, Congress leaders Vakkom Purushothaman, Thalekkunnil Basheer, M.M. Hassan and C. Mohanachandran are expected to address the gathering. Freedom fighters will be honoured at the function. On October 23, Seva Dal volunteers will take out a Smriti Yatra from the house of freedom fighter G. Ramachandran at Neyyatinkara where Gandhiji had paid a visit during the Independence Movement. Noted Gandhian P. Gopinathan Nair will hand over the flag to the volunteers to inaugurate the rally. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy will inaugurate a public meeting at Neyyatinkara and honour freedom fighters. The former Minister R. Balakrishna Pillai will deliver the keynote address. N. Sakthan and George Mercier, MLAs, will address the function. The third Smriti Yatra will commence from the Ayyankali Square at Venganoor on October 27. The rally will be followed by a public meeting to be inaugurated by Congress Legislature Party Deputy Leader G. Karthikeyan. Freedom fighter K.P. Madhavan will flag off the fourth Smriti Yatra at Orruttumandapam, Vettinad, on October 28. The Gandhi Smriti meeting at Kanyakulangara will be inaugurated by Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran. The Gandhi Smriti programmes will conclude on October 31 at a function to be held at the Martyrs’ Column. Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi will inaugurate the function.
