Lorry stir: FRAT plea to hold price line

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Federation of Residents Associations, Thiruvananthapuram, (FRAT) has urged the State government to ensure smooth movement of freight and check prices from shooting up in the wake of the lorry strike.

A pressnote issued by FRAT president T.K. Divakara Panikker and general secretary Paraniyam Devakumar here on Sunday criticised the tendency for frequent strikes bringing essential services to a halt. It said unscrupulous traders would capitalise on the situation to inflate prices and make a quick buck.

The federation said that any impediment to the movement of freight from neighbouring States would lead to an uncontrolled spurt in the prices of essential commodities.

It called upon the government to provide police protection to cargo vehicles ready to operate services. The pressnote also demanded steps to confiscate lorries refusing to ply.
