Kodiyeri calls for strict rule enforcement

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Rule-enforcement agencies must ensure that stern action is taken against law-breakers, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said.

Speaking after inaugurating the traffic police station at Thripunithura, he said that the shortage of manpower in the police department and the delay in making appointments would be remedied. K. Babu, MLA, presided over the function. The others who were present include Sebastian Paul, MP; Ranjini Suresh, chairperson of the Thripunithura Municipality; ADGP V.R. Rajeevan; IGP Vinson Paul; and City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham.

Later, inaugurating the installation of GPS vehicle-tracking system in Police-Control Room for vehicles in Kochi, he said that the educational qualification to join the police force would be increased. There were plans to set up an emergency-management cell in the State, so that ambulance services, police, and volunteers could be alerted faster.

This was the first time that the vehicle-tracking scheme has been introduced in the country. Under this scheme, 12 patrol vehicles and a police ambulance would be fitted with tracking devices enabling the control room to monitor and locate them, improving the quality of service and reducing response time.

The vehicles use a combination of global-positioning satellites and global system for mobile communication network. This system, with an error margin of just three metres, would also calculate the speed and direction of vehicles in real time. Two patrol vehicles were fitted with cameras and the control room could get live images from the action scene, helping the personnel assess the ground situation better. It can also be used as evidence in courts.
