PRESTIGIOUS PROJECT: Work on a road overbridge along the Uppanar Drain in Puducherry is progressing. PUDUCHERRY: Work on a Rs.27-crore road overbridge (ROB) along the alignment of the Uppanar Drain (UD) canal will be completed in 20 months, according to Public Works Department officials. The ROB, first of its kind in the Union Territory to decongest traffic, will connect Kamaraj Salai and Maraimalai Adigal Salai with a concrete road over the UD canal, the main carriageway for sewage and rain water. The 7.3-km-long bridge will have a two-lane road with 7.5-metre carriage way for vehicles and raised footpaths on either side. Service ducts will be provided below the footpath, according to a senior PWD official. In two phasesIn the first phase, work will be taken up to lay a road from the Balaji theatre junction, near Thiruvalluvur Salai, and New Town Theatre in Maraimalai Adigal Salai along the canal. In the second phase, the ROB will be extended from the Balaji theatre junction to Kokkupark on East Coast Road and New Town Theatre point to Colas Nagar near the Beach. Officials say extension of the bridge will go a long way in decongesting the town. Once the road is extended up to Kokkupark, vehicles need not enter the town to reach the beach. Traffic Department officials say they are waiting for the project to be completed to re-draw the traffic system in the town. The first phase will ease traffic along Thiruvalluvur Salai and Anna Salai, especially between the Jeeva Rukmuni theatre junction and the Raja theatre junction.
