RAJAHMUNDRY: Eight members of a family were killed in a ghastly road accident when the Tata Sumo in which they were travelling was hit by an RTC bus at Vadisaleru village of Rangampeta mandal in East Godavari on Monday. Superintendent of Police B. Srinivasulu who visited the spot said that the family in the four-wheeler was proceeding from Vijayawada to celebrate the first birthday function of a baby named Mannepalli Sudha in Sree Peetam of Kakinada. The driver tried to cross a small group of devotees coming in opposite direction. Just then, the non-stop RTC bus between Kakinada–Rajahmundry lost control and rammed into the Sumo. The impact of the collision was so deadly that the top of the Sumo blew off. Death was instantaneous and the bodies were seen mutilated beyond recognition. The family stays beside Satya Public School at Krishna Lanka in Vijayawada. The victims were identified as Kottapalli Ramaseeta (70), Kottapalli Umadevi (52), Kottapalli Kanakadurga (42), Madhavilatha (38), Kapoteswara Sarma (8), driver Ganti Ramakrishna (30), Mannepalli Sudha (1) and Kokuri Subbalakshmi (55). Four more, two travelling in the Sumo, RTC bus driver V. K. Lingam and a bus passenger V. Narasimha Murthy, who were seriously injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital here. Conductor diesVijayawada Staff Reporter writes: In another accident, three persons, including the conductor of an APSRTC bus, were killed in a road accident when the bus, which was on its way from Vijayawada to Rajahmundry, hit a slow-moving lorry at Durgapuram near Gannavaram around midnight on Sunday. At least 13 passengers were injured. The two passengers killed were identified as M. Venkata Ratnam (60) of Rajahmundry and Ramanik Patel (35) of Guntur. Bus conductor J. Nageswara Rao (50) succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital.. The injured were shifted to the Government General Hospital, while one critically injured person was undergoing treatment at the Care Hospital in Vijayawada. APSRTC Regional Manager M. Seethapathi visited the GGH and announced an ex gratia of Rs. 5,000 to the critically injured and Rs.1,000 to those with minor injuries.
