PUDUCHERRY: Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School has received the ‘Computer Literacy Excellence Award for Schools’ instituted by the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The United Schools Organisation conducted its 54th general conference and All India Schools Festival at Amalorpavam from October 15 to 18. The school came first in the basketball event in the under-19 combined grade girls’ category at the Zonal-1 School Games Competitions conducted by the Government of Puducherry recently. Selvan M. Vignesh of Standard V11-F of the school will represent the Puducherry State Schools Swimming Team at the National School Games 2007-08. In the State table tennis tournament conducted by the school, students of Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School fared well. In the mini-cadets level, V. Sudarsanan of Standard V G was the winner while Akash Kanna of Standard III B was the runner up. In the cadets level, Lokesh of Standard VI A was declared winner and Sudarsanen of Standard V G the runner up. In the non-medallists category Vijaykrishnan R. of Standard IX E claimed the runner-up position. D Amber Bansel of Standard XI C bagged the Sr. Mary Antoinette Rolling Trophy. Christopher K.J. of Standard VI C won four medals (3 silver and 1 bronze) and Vignesh of Standard VIII H received 3 medals (2 silver and 1 bronze) at the all India yoga competition conducted by Sri Jeyandra Saraswathi Swamigal Yoga Centre of Kanchipuram. B. Naran of Standard XII A2 won the second prize at the State-level shuttle tournament for boys under 19 years conducted by the Puducherry State Shuttle Badminton Association in Karaikal. Skill testStudents of Achariya Bala Siksha Mandir, Uppalam, came out in flying colours after taking the Assessment of Scholastic Skill through Educational Testing exam conducted by the Educational Initiatives Group, Ahmedabad. AwardSunil Dev, a student of Standard IV of Alpha Matriculation Higher Secondary School received the Yuvashre Kala Bharati award from Bharathi Yuva Kendra for his performance in chess competitions. He also received the ‘best performer’ award for 2006-07. Chess contestPadmaja S. of Standard V of St. Joseph of Cluny School came first in the under-11 State chess championship conducted by the Puducherry State Chess Association. Jennifer Jacquiline R. of Standard IX won the sub-junior singles title and women singles title in the second State-level tournament conducted by Amalorpavam table tennis club. ProjectsProject Day was organised in Achariya Siksha Mandir, Villianur, for students of Standards I to IX. Students of Achariya Siksha Mandir are also participating in Subject+, a programme organised by Alma Mater. Trainer Sathyamurthy, who dealt with interpersonal communication skills, said that a good communicator should always be polite, listen, and think before speaking. Table tennisAt St. Patricks Higher Secondary School, J. Susan Magi of Standard XI-B was declared the winner in the junior girls and women category in the State-level ranking table tennis tournament conducted by Amalorpavam Table Tennis Club. G. Sruthi of Standard XI-B was the runner up. J. Mary Joshine of Standard VIII-E was declared runner up in the sub-junior category. Janis Maria Fredrick of Standard IX-G participated as a qualified entrant in the Canara Bank 24th National Sub-Junior Girls Chess Championship held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, from October 2 to 10. V. Vijai of Standard IX-E and Barathiraja of Standard IX-G participated as a qualified entrant in the Canara Bank 33rd National Sub-Junior Boys Chess Championship. V. Vijai of Standard IX-E participated in the 36th National Junior Under-19 Boys Chess Championship 2007 held at Aurangabad in September, organised by the Marathwada Chess Association, Aurangabad.
