Steps taken to construct 2.5 lakh individual household toilets
Krishnagiri: The district administration has drawn up a plan to make Krishnagiri a fully sanitised district by April 2008.
Steps have been initiated to construct 2.5 lakh individual household toilets in the district at an outlay of Rs. 40 crore, said Collector Santhosh Babu here on Monday.
A three-pronged strategy would be employed to create awareness among the community on the importance of toilets. This includes training of women masons, providing incentive and formation of rural sanitary marts.
The Collector exhorted NGOs and self-help groups to create awareness among the locals on the construction and usage of individual household toilets. “The participation of people in implementation of Government schemes is essential,” he said.
The district administration would set up rural sanitary marts in Shoolagiri, Veppanapalli, Thally, Krishnagiri and Bargur blocks to provide raw materials required for the construction of toilets.
Out of 100 women self-help group members, only 20 were literate. Efforts have been initiated to educate all women SHGs in Krishnagiri district under a special literacy programme. The Collector also inaugurated a rural sanitary mart set up at Kaveripattinam block under the Total Sanitation Programme.
