Unannounced power cuts affecting agricultural activities: farmers

NAMAKKAL: Frequent disruptions in power supply and problems in the tapioca tuber procurement process were discussed among other things in the farmers’ grievances redressal day meeting held here on Friday.
Farmers complained that the unannounced power cuts had severely affected the agricultural activities. They urged the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to sort out the problems and ensure uninterrupted power supply in the district.
A few farmers demanded the district administration to initiate measures eliminate the role of middlemen in the tapioca procurement process.
The middlemen were collecting exorbitant amount as commission from the farmers.
The irregularities in the process should be removed immediately, Murugan, a farmer said.
Effluents
Another farmer Balasubramaniam from Mohanur asked the Salem Co-operative Sugar Mill management to inform the farmers about the conduct of the tripartite meeting in advance. He also asked the district administration to prevent the private establishments from discharging effluents into the water bodies and water carrying channels.
Chellappan, a farmer from Elachipalayam, appealed to the officials to take steps to remove the wild growth on the bunds of Tirumanimutharu River.
