THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Monday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to approve a special package proposed for continued operation of the Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT), Kochi, until liquefied natural gas (LNG) could be made available for its operations. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister noted that FACT was facing a crisis on account of the increase in prices of raw materials including naptha. Some of its plants were remaining idle for the past three months while production had been cut in others. This had affected the availability of fertilizers in the State, the communication said. Manmohan thankedMr. Achuthanandan thanked the Prime Minister for taking the lead to make natural gas available to the FACT when the proposed LNG terminal at Kochi is commissioned and urged that his support for the revival of FACT should continue. An official release noted that the special package proposed by the Ministry of Fertilizers and Chemicals had been under consideration of the Committee of Secretaries for sometime now. Meeting of the committee was postponed twice for various reasons. The Chief Minister had written to Dr. Manmohan Singh against this background.
