dated October 24, 1957 (there being no issue of the paper dated October 23): Soviet satellite

The maximum height of the Russian satellite is decreasing by about two miles a day, the Ministry of Supply said on October 21. According to a summary of data garnered by scientists working with specialised radar and radio equipment, the satellite’s height over Britain varies between 125 nautical miles on evening transits and 245 nautical miles on morning transits due to the satellite’s elliptical orbits. The time to complete an orbit is decreasing by about two seconds a day due to atmospheric drag.
