Centre has 4 weeks to file affidavit on life convicts
Legal Correspondent
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday granted four weeks for the Centre to file its response to a petition seeking formulation of a policy and guidelines on life convicts languishing in jail even after completing 14 years.
A Bench consisting of Justices H.K. Sema and Lokeshwar Singh Panta granted the time after Solicitor-General G.E. Vahanvati said the Centre would file a comprehensive affidavit within four weeks. Earlier it filed an affidavit and would now file its response to the questions raised in the public interest litigation petition.
Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta was present in the court in response to a direction issued on October 10 by the Bench, which is hearing the petition filed by advocate M.K. Balakrishnan alleging that thousands of life convicts were languishing in jails across the country.
