News Analysis
* In an article “The Netherlands: discovery of a new India” (Editorial page, October 22, 2007), the name and designation of the person who spoke to Indian journalists at The Hague office of Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers mistakenly went as Mechteld J.A. Oomen, deputy director, international economic affairs. It should have been Chairman (of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers) B.E.M. Wientjes. The error was in the first edition and corrected later. * The caption of the accompanying AP photograph in a PTI report “Bobby Jindal faces tough tasks ahead” (October 22, 2007) was: “Time To Rejoice: Louisiana Governor-elect Bobby Jindal, his wife Supriya and son Shaan Robert, acknowledge supporters at the party headquarters in Baton Rouge, Los Angeles, on Saturday.” Baton Rouge is in Louisiana. This detail was right in the text. (Baton Rouge, from the French Bâton rouge or “red stick”, is the capital and the second largest city in Louisiana behind New Orleans. It is a major industrial, petrochemical, and port centre of the American South.) * The expansion of TRAI is the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, and not the Telecom Regularity Authority of India as was published in a report “No cap on telecom players in a service area” (“Business” page, October 20, 2007). * The caption of the accompanying AFP photograph in a Guardian report “Europe would lose if Turkey is rejected” (Op-Ed, October 18, 2007) was: “British Foreign Secretary David Miliband (right) and Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan in Ankara on September 5 before their meeting to discuss bilateral ties and Ankara’s bid to join the EU.” It should have been “British Foreign Secretary David Miliband (left) ….” * In a report “Quiet birthday for Naveen Patnaik” (October 17, 2007), the birthday of Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was incorrectly mentioned as October 10, 1946. It should have been October 16, 1946. * The caption of the accompanying AFP photograph in a report “Dark horse wins Man Booker Prize” (“Newscape” page, October 18, 2007) incorrectly mentioned the name of the winner, Irish author Anne Enright, as Ann Enright, while the detail was right in the text. The error was corrected in later editions. * A chess report “Hari trips Topalov” (“Sport”, October 19, 2007) gave the scores of Judit Polgar and Veselin Topalov as 4 each. A reader felt it should be 3 each, citing the scoring system in a tournament — each win is credited with 3 points and each draw 1 point. Since Topalov and Judit had drawn three matches and lost one, it should have been 3 each, the reader said. The Sports Desk clarifies that the report is right. Both Topalov and Judith had four points each at the end of the second round, which is correct. In the first round, Topalov and Polgar finished with a score of three points each as they had won one game each. In the second round, both Polgar and Topalov lost to their respective opponents and got one point each as a player gets one point for a draw and 0.5 point for a loss. (The report was on the Blindfold World Cup semi-rapid chess tournament at Bilbao, Spain.) * In a report “Indians keep lead” (“Sport”, October 18, 2007), on the second day of sailing at the CISM Military World Games, the fourth paragraph incorrectly said that Spain had two first positions on the first day. It should have been two second positions on the first day. * In a report “Resurgent Randhawa in joint lead” (“Sport”, October 14, 2007), the second paragraph said that Mark Brown was in the third place with 209 points, while the score column gave it as 207 points. The score column was right. (The report was on the $500,000 Hero Honda Indian Open golf championship.)
