DUBAI: Pressure is mounting on the Turkish government to attack hideouts of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in northern Iraq after the rebel group killed 12 Turkish soldiers in an ambush on Sunday. The PKK on Monday released the names of seven Turkish soldiers that it had seized following its cross border attack. The PKK ambush has triggered uproar throughout Turkey, with the media, opposition parties and ordinary people calling for action. Thousands marched in Istanbul on Monday to protest against the PKK attack. Angry demonstrations have also taken place spontaneously in several other parts of the country. Newspapers have splashed photographs of dead soldiers, many of them young recruits and have demanded revenge. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has so far decided to exercise restraint. However, he made it plain that patience is not endless. In an interview to the Times, Mr. Erdogan has said conflict can be avoided if the Americans and the Iraqi authorities expelled the PKK and handed over its leaders. Meanwhile, Mr. Erdogan’s government, has, despite opposition, gone ahead with a referendum on having a popularly elected President. Early results showed an emerging trend in favour of a popularly elected presidency. Mr. Erdogan had called for early parliamentary elections in July after his differences with the secular opposition and the military over the presidency became irreconcilable.
