TIRUPUR: Disbursal of Deepavali bonus for knitwear workers in Tirupur has begun. The fall of US dollar vis-À-vis the Indian rupee has not had much impact on bonus payment, said a trade union leader. Unlike the wage agreement, which was settled after talks between various trade organisations and trade unions and is applicable to all, bonus talks were held in individual factories between managements and trade unions. “Though some units cited financial difficulties none has cut on the quantum of bonus given last year. In fact, many units have hiked it by two to five per cent. A garment factory in Netaji Apparel Park offered 15 per cent bonus this year,” said M. Chandran, leader of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). While asking the factories to decide the bonus percentage based on their performance, Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA) has asked them to disburse the amount at the earliest. “Delay in payment of bonus may lead to unwanted problems. We hope all units will be paying the bonus before the weekend,” says TEA secretary G. Karthikeyan. According to Mr. Karthikeyan, roughly Rs.150 crore to Rs.180 crore will be disbursed to the workers as bonus.
