VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, has asked the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board officials to close a well that was supplying water to Kullursandhai panchayat with high fluoride content.
Reviewing the drinking water position in the district here on Monday, the Collector also asked the officials to find out an alternative source for the panchayat.
People were complaining that their teeth were turning yellow in colour after consuming the water.
The TWAD Board Executive Engineer, V. Kathirvel, said that the scheme, implemented by the Board and which was now under the maintenance of the local body, was serving over 3,000 people.
The Collector instructed the officials to find new sources two or three km away from the present source. “We will conduct a survey soon near Periyavallikulam. If the water there is good, we will create a source there for the panchayat,” he said.
Mr. Kathirvel said that though there was technology available to treat water with fluoride content, it was a costly process that could not be maintained by the local body for a longer period.
The Collector also asked the officials to look into the possibility of providing Tambiraparani river water to the panchayat.
