India’s first International Folk Festival at Jodhpur

Jodhpur: Perched high above the surrounding desert landscape, the majestic Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur - the second largest city of Rajasthan - is all set to host the India’s first Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF) from October 25-29.

Featuring more than 200 local and international folk, classical and fusion artists, the festival is a presented by two of the country’s leading heritage trusts - Mehrangarh Museum Trust (MMT) of Jodhpur and Jaipur Virasat Foundation (JVF). The UNESCO has endorsed the festival as ’People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development’.

Unique opportunity

It will be a unique opportunity to witness performances by talented musicians, singers, dancers, storytellers and artisans, against a setting of unparallelled beauty, K S Jasol of MMT said here ay.

Vinod Joshi, the event director and an official of JVF, said the festival, which is organised under the umbrella title “Festival of Development”, aims at creating new livelihood opportunities for the incredibly talented performing artists and craftspeople of the state.

The festival highlights include live shows by rock band ‘Indian Ocean’ (26th October) and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia (27th October); Tarhana - a musical fusion between a Holland-based band and local folk musicians, and three club nights with the UK and Indian bands brought together by the British Council, Joshi said.

Profit generated from the festival will be used for projects benefiting performing arts communities of the state, Jasol said, adding such festivals helps promote local tourism in a big way. -- PTI
