Workers demanded immediate opening of the mill closed since past 11 days ADILABAD: Police at Kagaznagar resorted to caning on Monday to disperse an angry crowd of workers of the closed Sirpur Paper Mills (SPM) who were smashing furniture at the office of the recognised trade union, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) situated in front of old Chenna Reddy Ground. The agitated workers belonged to other trade unions and demanded immediate opening of the mill that is closed since the past 11 days due to disagreement between the management and the BMS over quantum of bonus to be paid. Meanwhile, the hunger strike launched by Sirpur MLA Koneru Konappa to pressurise both the parties to reach an agreement so that the factory opens soon, entered third day. Doctors attending on the MLA at his hunger strike camp said his health was deteriorating, albeit slowly. Non BMS workers, who were dispersed from the recognised trade union office later reached the residence of Kallola Bhattacharya, the BMS president apparently with the intention of grilling him over the impasse. However, police drove them away from the place. Bellampalli Additional Superintendent of Police K. Ramesh supervised the bandobast.
