PUDUCHERRY: The Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences in Kalapet has denied charges of medical negligence leading to the death of a seven-year-old girl from Veerapogam village in Perambalur district at its hospital. Activists of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi laid siege to the hospital on Monday, demanding adequate compensation for the child’s family. Talking to reporters here, Dr K. Ravindran, head of the department of Forensic Sciences, and Dr P. Nalini, head of the Paediatrics Department, said the hospital was ready for a probe. Dr .Ravindran said the child, suffering from viral meningoencephalitis (brain fever), was brought to the hospital in a critical condition on October 10. The parents were informed about the nature of the disease and survival chances, he added. She was immediately put on ventilator support and was not responding to medication, Dr. Nalini said. “No deal”Stating that the hospital was not ready for any “one-to-one deal” as demanded by the VCK, he said the parents could approach the consumer forum. If the forum found them guilty, the hospital was ready to pay compensation. He also said the hospital had waived the sum of Rs 22,000 incurred as medical expense.
