Tough paper

Thousands of student trainees, most of them from villages, attended the examinations for second year Diploma in Teacher Education. They said that the “English Language Education Examination” was very tough. It was time-consuming for the students, particularly in the multiple choice section. The options given for most of the questions were ambiguous. Such a question paper is against the psychology of evaluation. Bloom’s Taxonomy was neglected. A committee must go into the drawbacks of the paper and award reasonable marks to students.

No holidays

It is the genuine grievance of teaching staff working in private and minority institutions that they are compelled to attend on declared holidays as per the whims and fancies of the management. Holidays are declared by the government after much deliberations and considering the significance attached to them. To deny the privilege of availing the holidays will create a sense of division among equals _ the teaching staff and students. It is expected that private institutions too should observe the declared holidays to maintain decorum.

Re-lay road

Abraham Pandithar Road in the heart of Thanjavur town is in a bad condition and has not been re-laid for many years. Cinema theatres, business establishments and lodges are situated on this road near Thanjavur Railway Junction and Old Bus Stand. I request Thanjavur municipality to take necessary steps.

No work, no pay

“No work, no pay” is the general guideline issued by Central and State Governments. Thousands of employees did not turn up for work on bandh day on October 1. The guidelines may be followed so that a huge amount can be saved and utilised for welfare measures for people below poverty line.

Speeding menace

Frequent accidents are reported from Mahathana Street in Mayiladuturai town. Three schools are situated on this street. After successfully completing underground drainage works, the Mayiladuthurai Municipality had recently re-laid the road. Since then, vehicle-users are moving at great speed. The municipal administration has failed to put up a speed-breaker near the school zones. I request the authorities to erect a speed-breaker at the earliest.

Bad to worse

This has reference to the observation of CPI leader and MP Gurudas Dasgupta that “the judiciary, by banning general strikes and the right of government employees to strike, appeared to be turning increasingly conservative” (The Hindu, October 7, 2007). But he should not forget that government employees form only a negligible percentage in the entire nation. The establishment costs are more than 50 percent of the revenue. This should be restricted to 40 percent first. The recognition for service associations should be renewed based on the performance of the employees, without giving room for corruption in government offices.

Despite the increase in their pay, the public could not avail of the services of public servants without greasing the palms of the staff.

As ‘delay breeds corruption’, the annual cursory and surprise inspection of all government offices should be taken up. Notes must be issued instantly and replies obtained. Action must be taken against corrupt staff. Will the government do the needful?

Karur
