Staff Reporter

1,200 cases booked for driving sans helmet

“The checks also come in handy to verify any possession of weapons”

PUDUKOTTAI: The police have intensified vehicle checks in the district with law-enforcers cracking the whip, especially against offenders found riding under inebriated condition.

The special drive, which was launched in all the six police sub-divisions in August, has resulted in the booking of over 1,600 cases of violations of the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act till now.

The checks are being conducted in the Keeranur, Pudukottai, Ponnamaravathy, Kottaipattinam, Aranthangi and Alankudi sub-divisions.

The cases were registered under the head of offences including drunken driving, driving without licence, emission of excess smoke, vehicles with protruding rods without abiding by safety norms, police sources told The Hindu here on Monday.

A majority of 1,200 cases were registered against driving without helmet; 353 against drunken-driving, 221 cases against driving without licence, 45 against emission of excess smoke and 52 against owners of the vehicles with protruding rods.

“We have recommended cancellation of licences in respect of 94 cases of drunken driving after obtaining medical certificate from the government doctor,” the sources said. Of them, the Regional Transport Officer, Pudukottai has ordered the cancellation of 53 licences.

Superintendent of Police Kapil Kumar C. Saratkar said that the vehicle checks were being conducted at different times across the district to keep a track of not only traffic rule offenders but also to check the movement of anti-social elements.

The checks also come in handy to verify any possible possession of weapons or arms with a view to preventing property crimes such as robbery and chain snatching at vulnerable places, he added.
