Lalgudi Jayaraman honoured

Rich tributes were paid to his contribution to

the Carnatic

music world


CHENNAI: Six leading dance schools and dance gurus came together on a single platform provided by Tamil Maiyam to dedicate a cultural ensemble in honour of violin maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman.

With the Music Academy, the venue of the mega event, overflowing with Carnatic music lovers and avid music buffs, specially invited speakers at a brief function in between the three-hour musical and cultural confluence paid rich tributes to the signal contribution made by the violin maestro in the Carnatic music world.

N. Murali, president of the Music Academy and Managing Director of The Hindu, described Mr. Jayaraman as a “living legend and a great violin maestro.”

Mr. Jayaraman’s quest for perfection, his continuing of the traditional framework while carving out his own style provided refreshing music.

Another striking quality of his was that he imparted his wide-ranging knowledge of music and the violin to the younger generation.

Mr. Murali also had a word of praise for Tamil Maiyam for being secular in nature and for bringing out the rich cultural heritage of South India through different forms of music and cultural events. A ponnadai, a memento and a plaque resembling a violin were presented by Mr. Murali to Mr. Jayaraman.

Rev. Fr. Jagath Casper Raj, Head of the Tamil Maiyam, said the meaningful event brought out the “inclusive spirit of Chennai” and by honouring Mr. Jayaraman Tamil Maiyam was honouring itself.

Mr. Jayaraman, whose speech was read out by his son, G.J.R. Krishnan, said it was heartening to note that six leading institutions and renowned gurus in the Carnatic music field joined together to honour him.
