PMK presents vision document

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi has presented a vision document, which, it says, will transform Tamil Nadu into a region of “prosperity sans poverty” by 2020.

Presenting the document at a press conference here on Monday, PMK founder S. Ramadoss said the mission could be achieved through a six-pronged strategy, which included innovative and inclusive industrial development, rejuvenation of rural economy, accelerated employment generation, citizen-oriented governance and people-based politics.

Main issues

Dr. Ramadoss said major issues that were causing concern were, “unjust and inequitable economic growth, unemployment, skewed industrial development model, neglect of informal economy, languishing rural economy, and youth without direction.”

According to a report by the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector there had been uneven economic growth with a chunk of unorganised workers getting a paltry wage of Rs. 20 a day on the one side and billionaires on the other. The unemployment rate at 12.05 per cent in the State was the highest in the country and the number of educated youth waiting for employment had reached an explosive level.

The current industrial development was driven by foreign direct investment and was spawning job-less growth, which was dangerous in the long run.

Consistent government policies, he alleged, had failed to regulate, guide and support a vast segment of the economy due to “pre-conceived notions” of policy makers.

Uneven growth

The current policy was urban oriented and not rural oriented, which was responsible for the uneven growth. Nearly 56 per cent of the State’s population living in rural areas was dependent on less than one seventh of the State’s income.

The PMK leader said the document would be handed over to the Chief Minister, District Collectors, Vice-chancellors of universities, economists, and voluntary organisations.
