NEW APPOINTEES: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi handing over the appointment order to a recruit at a function organised by the Public Works Department in Chennai on Tuesday. PWD Minister Durai Murugan and Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy are in the picture. — CHENNAI: As many as 1,953 assistant engineers (AEs) were appointed to the Public Works Department (PWD) since 1972 during different spells of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said here on Monday. Pointing out that totally 2,873 assistant engineers were recruited to the department in the last 35 years, he alluded to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regimes in the past and said only 15 AEs were appointed in 10 years. He was giving away appointment letters to recruits at a function organised by the PWD. At the time of assumption of office by the present Government in May 2006, there were 569 vacancies for the post of Assistant Engineers. All these were filled through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission and the appointment orders given to as many persons at the function. Besides, services of 1,056 workers on daily wages were regularised and 52 persons appointed on compassionate grounds. Referring to his Government’s unemployment allowance scheme, Mr. Karunanidhi said it was being given to the youth as jobs could not be given immediately to them. Public Works and Law Minister Durai Murugan said construction of the Assembly complex and a modern State library building would be completed as scheduled. He advised the recruits to work where they were posted. L. K. Tripathy, Chief Secretary; S. Audiseshiah, Public Works Secretary; S. Rajarethinam, Secretary to the Chief Minister; and P. Raman, Engineer-in-Chief of the PWD, were present.
