MUMBAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the poor quality of imported wheat soon, according to the former party MP, Kirit Somaiya. The party will demand a stop to the distribution of infected imported wheat and laboratory testing of such wheat in the godowns of the State government and the Food Corporation of India. Mr. Somaiya continued his attack on Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and said several questions on the wheat import were not answered. Mr. Pawar alleged last week that Mr. Somaiya was fabricating the infected wheat samples. To counter this, Mr. Somaiya, along with leaders from Sindhudurg district, on Saturday visited ration shops in Banda and found that red imported wheat infected with insects was being sold. Five samples of the rotten wheat were sealed on the spot and sent to the Agriculture Ministry. Later, the BJP members also visited the government godown at Sawantwadi and found bags of rotten wheat. On Monday, a BJP team met Maharashtra Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Baba Siddiqui and handed over samples of infected wheat to him. Mr. Siddiqui said the wheat stocks in the godowns would be tested first before being distributed to the public through the PDS.
