Jeju Island: Jeju Island in South Korea, volcanic rocks and craters dotting its landscape, is host to the major advertising event of the year, Adasia 2007, that started on Monday. Now in its 50th year, Adasia has come back to South Korea after a span of 23 years. Liberalisation in advertising was officially heralded at Adasia 1984 in Seoul. Throbbing drums and a vibrant audiovisual presentation highlighted the strides made in the advertising industry over the decades. Lauding the organisers for putting together Asia’s biggest global-scale meet on advertising, South Korea’s Minister for Culture and Tourism, Jong-min Kim, said: “Korea is one of the fastest advancing countries, excelling in New Media advertising and technologies… . Its dynamic national culture often stuns the people of the world. It is my conviction that advertising will double the miraculous energy inherent in Korean people, and help the country emerge as one of the cultural superpowers of the world.” The three-day event is being attended by hundreds of advertising and marketing professionals from all over Asia. There is a galaxy of speakers including heads of advertising agencies from the Western countries. Among the speakers from India are Colvyn J. Harris, chief executive officer, JWT; and Sam Balsara, chairman and managing director, Madison Communications. Gautam Rakshitof the “Onida Devil” fame was one of the recipients of the Asian Federation of Advertising Agencies (AFAA) awards, for his contributions to the industry. The 86-strong Indian delegation will make a strong bid to host Adasia 2011.
