Hop on, hop off tours soon

R.K. Radhakrishnan

CHENNAI: The Transport Department will soon operate ‘hop on, hop off’ tours in the city in a bid to attract more tourists and enable them to visit places of historical or aesthetic importance at their convenience.

The government order issued on October 18 states a tourist can board the sightseeing tour bus and get off at any stop. The Tourism Department mooted the proposal and wanted the Transport Department to operate the service.

Four specially designed 18-seater air-conditioned coaches will be used for the 32-km sightseeing tours. The estimated time for a full round trip is 90 minutes and the bus will be available every 30 minutes at a stop.

The tour will begin at the High Court and pass through Fort St. George, Madras University, Marina, Vivekanandar Illam, Santhome Basilica, Kapaleeswarar Temple, Theosophical Society, Elliots Beach, Ashtalakshmi Temple, Velankanni Church, TIDEL Park, National Park (Guindy), Birla Planetarium, Valluvar Kottam, Government Museum, Ripon Building and Central Station.
