YSR expresses displeasure over slow pace of the execution of the Musi Revitalisation project

HYDERABAD: A suspension bridge will be constructed across river Musi opposite the Salar Jung Museum on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, as part of the Musi Revitalisation Project.

Also, two check-dams will be built across the river within the city limits. A proposal for these dams has been cleared by the Irrigation Department.

A detailed project report has been sent to the Union Government for approval, subject to clearance by the Central Water Commission.

Progress reviewed

S. P. Singh, Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration & Urban Development, made these details available to reporters after Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy reviewed the progress of the project at a meeting here on Monday.

The Chief Minister expressed displeasure at the slow pace of the execution of the project. He wanted the officials to implement the works, including landscaping, on a war footing so that they could be completed at least by next year.

The project also comprises components to upgrade river environment and road infrastructure and provide for heritage and conservation, rehabilitation and resettlement of the slums and development of growth corridors. In addition, it is proposed to build river drives, parks, gardens, promenades, informal markets, public utilities, commercial and residential spaces.

Heritage markets

All these will yield benefits like groundwater recharge, water retention, strengthening of city transportation network, relocation and resettlement of slums. At present, untreated sewage and stagnant pools of muddy and oily water dot the river-bed.

Under the project, Puranpul, Muslim Jung, Nayapul and Chaderghat bridges, heritage structures like City College, High Court, Osmania Hospital and State Library would be refurbished with colouring and illumination. Heritage markets would be developed at Jumerath Bazar and Muslim Jung Bridge.
